Care home residents across Guernsey have been taking part in a creative competition organised by Dementia Friendly Guernsey, showcasing their artistic talents through an 'under the sea' theme.

The initiative, designed as part of the organisation's ongoing engagement with the island's care homes, has produced six entries ranging from individual projects to collaborative efforts involving both residents and care staff.

Participants have created sea creatures from recycled household items, balloon paintings, models crafted from clay and pipe cleaners, colouring projects, and treasure chests filled with jewels and coins. The displays have been positioned in communal areas throughout the care homes, allowing residents, relatives, and friends to appreciate the creative work.

Julie Bulpitt from Dementia Friendly Guernsey said: "These competitions are a great way to engage residents and staff in meaningful cognitive activities and allowing them to include some of their own ideas, in a creative way."

The creative process has provided opportunities for residents to reminisce about their lives, with conversations ranging from beach experiences to memories of those who have worked at sea. The displays vary considerably in scale, from single pictures to elaborate installations covering entire walls from floor to ceiling, creating an immersive underwater atmosphere.

Ms Bulpitt added: "Whilst talking to some of the residents who took part, it was lovely to see their enthusiasm and pride as to what they have achieved."

The displays remain in place in the communal areas of participating care homes for friends and family to see.

Dementia Friendly Guernsey continues to develop engagement activities aimed at providing meaningful cognitive stimulation for care home residents across the island.
