Waste and recycling collections scheduled for Thursday night have been cancelled due to severe weather forecast as Storm Austen approaches the island.

On Friday morning, winds are forecast to reach Gale F8 to Severe Gale F9 with gusts of 70 to 80 mph with a gradual decrease during the afternoon.

Householders are being advised not to set out any waste or recycling materials this evening, with all overnight collections called off as a precautionary measure.

Alternative arrangements are being put in place for affected households. Collections will instead take place on Friday night, 23 October. However, residents are being asked to wait until Friday evening before putting their materials out, as high winds are expected to continue throughout most of the day.

All public waste and recycling sites may also be closed on Friday due to the forecast severe conditions. The sites will remain under review depending on how the weather develops throughout the day.

Guernsey Waste operations manager Rachel Lowe said: "Given the severity of the weather warnings, there will be no waste and recycling collections on Thursday night. Alternative arrangements will be notified as soon as the plans are confirmed with the parish collection contractors."

Further updates on collection schedules and waste site opening hours will be issued through local media outlets and Guernsey Waste's social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Residents are encouraged to monitor these channels for the latest information as the storm passes through the area.
