Art for Guernsey has announced a summer exhibition titled "The Wonder of Warhol," showcasing a selection of artworks by Andy Warhol and artists he inspired or collaborated with at his studio known as The Factory.
The exhibition runs until 6 September at the Guernsey Gallery, located on Mansell Street, St Peter Port.
The exhibition will feature a rotation of pieces displayed in the Julius Baer Strong Room, including works by Deborah Kass and Steve Kaufman alongside Warhol's own pieces. Additionally, Art for Guernsey is arranging informal talks as part of their "Conversations with..." series, featuring local artists and experts discussing Warhol’s influence.
Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was a pivotal figure in the Pop Art movement, known for his colourful and commercially inspired artworks depicting celebrities and everyday products. His studio, The Factory, became a central hub for artists and cultural icons, and his approach to art has had a lasting impact on contemporary culture.
Art for Guernsey expressed gratitude to Julius Baer Guernsey for sponsoring the Julius Baer Strong Room, allowing students and the general public to view and learn about these unique pieces, which are otherwise held privately on the island.
"The Wonder of Warhol" has coincided with the opening of a new exhibition, "Diversion".
This exhibition features contemporary and street art, with Mansell Street transformed into an artistic canvas as visiting and local artists collaborate alongside children participating in the charity’s Summer Holiday Art Club.
David Ummels, Chairman and Founder of Art for Guernsey, said: “Andy Warhol is viewed as an iconic figure by many graffiti artists, and a lot of street art is inspired by the Pop Art movement.
"Therefore, showing artworks by Warhol and related artists alongside our Diversion show, and visually rejuvenating the Old Quarter under the spiritual oversight of Warhol, makes perfect sense to us. The team would like to express our thanks to Julius Baer Guernsey, as well as to the local collectors who have kindly loaned us these fascinating artworks for everyone to enjoy.”
Jock Pettitt, Curation Director of Art for Guernsey, added: “This Warhol season adds another layer to the many notable artists already featured in the gallery, picking up on the Pop Art genre, which is arguably one of the most recognisable eras of art history after Impressionism.
"Warhol changed things, with his style, his subject and his approach. Whilst having a team of people producing the work is not a new concept, but commonplace throughout art history, Warhol embraced it to the full and created a thriving subculture that was as vibrant and expressive as his bold artworks.
"They grab your attention, provoke conversation and offer depth beyond the initial impact and we invite you to come and see the works for yourself over the summer and join us for a few evenings of conversation that will follow.”
