  • Art for Guernsey announces the "Diversion" exhibition to revitalise the Old Quarter.
  • It features both international and local artists in a street art showcase.
  • An open exhibition will run from 27 June to 30 August.
  • Mansell Street will also become a vibrant street art canvas throughout the summer

Art for Guernsey has unveiled plans for its upcoming exhibition titled "Diversion," set to run from 27 June to 30 August.

The initiative aims to breathe new life into the Old Quarter of St Peter Port through a collaborative effort involving local and international artists.

The "Diversion" exhibition is a two-part show. The first segment revisits the street art theme established during the previous exhibition, "Transformation".

The second aspect involves transforming Mansell Street into a vibrant street art canvas throughout the summer, allowing local artists, visiting artists, and children from the charity's Summer Holiday Art Club to create murals and artworks.

David Ummels, Chairman and Founder of Art for Guernsey, said: “Almost four years ago, we had this amazing opportunity to find a home in the Old Quarter and renovate the Art for Guernsey Gallery. It was considered the ‘wrong’ place to be, and that’s exactly why we came because we felt that art and cultural activities can bring footfall and bring more customers to all our neighbours for the common good.”

He expressed anticipation for the transformation of the area: “We are delighted that, a few weeks from now, the eyesore view that everybody knows will disappear and will be replaced by a street art extravaganza that will be an attraction for visitors and for the community.”

Curation Director Jock Pettitt said: “Through pulling together a local response for this project, we’ve learnt so much about the contemporary and street artists on the island and we’ve been blown away by the response we’ve had.”

The exhibition includes contributions from twelve international artists, such as Teddy Baden, Leo Boyd, and Charlie Mcfarley, along with fourteen local artists who will produce high-quality works. Pettitt described the initiative as a festival of art, combining local talent with broader artistic influences.

By realising this project, Art for Guernsey intends to transform the community’s perception of the Old Quarter while generating increased visitor footfall to support surrounding businesses.

The exhibition's curatorial approach invites artists to consider themes of disruption and new perspectives in both their works and the overall transformation of the area.
