St Sampson’s High School will implement the 'School Street' scheme on La Vieille Rue, marking it as the first secondary school in Guernsey to do so.

This initiative follows successful trials at St Martin’s Primary School and La Houguette Primary School.

The scheme involves limiting vehicle access during busy school hours to foster healthier and safer travel options for students by encouraging walking and cycling.

The trial is scheduled to commence on 4th September, coinciding with the start of the new school year.

It will run until 24th October, with road closures in effect on weekdays from 8:00 to 8:30 am and from 3:00 to 3:30 pm. Exceptions are made for cyclists, emergency vehicles, and residents requiring access.

Traffic & Highway Services plan to monitor the trial's effectiveness and report the findings to Environment & Infrastructure. Following this assessment, the Committee will decide whether to officially extend the trial for another twelve months.

Paul James, Traffic and Highway Services Road Safety Officer, said: “We’re pleased to be working with St Sampson’s High School to trial the latest ‘School Street.’ Encouraging people to use alternative transport where appropriate is one of our key objectives, and making it safer for students to walk or cycle is a really good way to encourage them to change their travel habits in a way they can carry through into adulthood.”

Vicky Godley, Principal of St Sampson’s High School, said “We’re proud to be the first secondary school in Guernsey to trial the ‘School Street’ scheme.

"In partnership with Traffic and Highway Services and the Health Improvement Commission, we’ve identified La Vieille Rue as the road with the greatest potential to reduce traffic, improve safety and encourage more students and staff to walk or cycle to school.

"I’m looking forward to seeing the impact of this trial, which has already proven successful in over 1,000 schools worldwide.”

Anyone can give feedback about the trial by contacting Traffic & Highway Services via email at traffic@gov.gg or by writing to Edward T Wheadon House, Le Truchot, St Peter Port, GY1 3WH before 20th October.
