The Weekly Briefing from The Quarry

A (not so brief) message from the editor

There is nothing quite like an election.

I’ve covered every one since 2004 and while I miss the excitement of the rolling results coming in from the districts, the emotion and intrigue remains.

Having only just launched, we came late to the party, but were keen to offer something for the different audiences out there. On our site we have detailed reaction to watch from a range of sitting and new candidates, while you can find our Top of the Polls countdown on TikTok and Insta for a snapshot of who got in, how their performance compares to five years ago, and how many votes they won.

I’m keen to do more analysis of what the makeup of the new States could mean given the election pledges, which will be appearing in the coming days (aided by BallotBot), but before that Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, soon to be a candidate for the P&R presidency, has shared some detailed thoughts on the financial challenges ahead that have been laid bare in the latest accounts published yesterday.

There’s been a lot of politics this week, so The Quarry was also keen to shine the spotlight elsewhere. We welcomed the Guernsey Sports Commission for our latest podcast, talking about the Specsavers Youth Games.

It’s quite something when you take a step back and think about how many young people have been given a taste of sport that may well stick with them for life thanks to the event over the last two decades, and also what that means not just for those individuals’ physical and mental health, but also wider preventative health care that is so vital.

If you like what we’re doing and setting out to achieve with the Quarry, please spread the word among your friends, family and colleagues. We want to make this a real community effort and can only do that with your help!

Nick
