Their story reads like the plot of a novel. It involves escaping a pressgang in Jersey, narrowly avoiding a French naval attack, locking up a drunken captain while becalmed in the middle of the Atlantic, infant death, a grueling journey across land in thunderstorms with trees falling around them and then unwittingly camping just one hundred metres or so from what was to become their home after their campfire smoke was spotted.
