In 1806 a small group of islanders embarked on a perilous months-long journey that would shape a small part of America.

Their story reads like the plot of a novel.

It involves escaping a pressgang in Jersey, narrowly avoiding a French naval attack, locking up a drunken captain while becalmed in the middle of the Atlantic, infant death, a grueling journey across land in thunderstorms with trees falling around them and then unwittingly camping just one hundred metres or so from what was to become their home after their campfire smoke was spotted.

Some 220 years later moves are being made to reconnect the two “Guernseys” and a letter uncovered by the Island Archives has provided vivid, first hand detail of those early pioneering days:

“Many times I’ve longed to return to Guernsey” - a voice from 1807 sheds more light on the incredible story of how islanders settled in America
