Skipton International has announced the opening of registration for The Big Skipton Sleep Out 2026, scheduled for Friday 23 January at King George V Memorial Playing Fields.

This annual event challenges community members to exchange their comfortable beds for sleeping bags to demonstrate solidarity with those facing housing insecurity in Guernsey.

In its inaugural year, The Big Skipton Sleep Out saw participation from 150 individuals, raising over £40,000 for Caritas Guernsey's modular housing initiative.

According to estimates, one in 64 people in Guernsey lacks secure housing.

Susan Fouquier, Chief Executive Officer of Skipton International, said: “As one of the island’s largest mortgage providers, we know how important secure housing is and how devastating it can be when people don’t have access to it.

“That’s why we created The Big Skipton Sleep Out: to bring the community together and raise funds for real, practical solutions. It’s a tough night, but it’s also a hopeful one because every person who takes part is helping to build something better.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit The Caritas Community Project, which focuses on providing dignified and stable accommodation for those experiencing homelessness.

This initiative aims to foster a supportive community atmosphere where residents can access necessary services and long-term assistance.

Graham Merfield, Chair of Caritas Guernsey, said: “The reality is that too many people in our community still don’t have a place to call home. That’s why the support from The Big Skipton Sleep Out is so vital. The funds raised last year have already helped us take real steps toward building a modular housing community that offers not just shelter, but dignity, stability, and hope.”

The event is also an opportunity for corporate teams to engage. Last year, many businesses participated to enhance their impact through matched giving, resulting in doubled contributions.

Participants will sleep outdoors from 7pm to 6:30am in basic shelter. The event is open to individuals aged 16 and older, and early registration is recommended to secure a place.
