Stay at home warning with Storm Goretti expected to pick up from 6pm
Winds could gust up to Force 12 with heavy rainfall when Storm Goretti passes the island, authorities have warned.
Staff from across the public sector met yesterday to put plans in place, and while awaiting a final forecast which will be issued this morning, the States said that current projections are that the island could experience serious storm weather.
The States is recommending that people stay at home this evening and overnight for their safety.
Wind speeds are expected to significantly pick up around 6pm tomorrow (Thursday 8 January). The Airport will close at that time.

Winds are projected to peak at 9pm and continue into the early hours of Friday.
High tide of 8.28m. is at 10.15pm.
Aurigny has already warned passengers of potential disruption to its services.
Events taking place on States of Guernsey sites are likely to be cancelled, with confirmation expected this morning.
“We’d also ask people to secure their properties; check their gardens for anything that needs to be secured to reduce the risk of flying debris.
“Islanders with boats are asked to check and secure their moorings ahead of the storm. It is likely that bus services will finish early on Thursday and be suspended until wind speeds drop. Kerbside recycling collection could also be cancelled.”

Flights will be impacted tonight and tomorrow morning.
The Guernsey Airport terminal is expected to reopen at 7am on Friday, following early morning safety inspections. The first inbound flights on Friday are currently expected to arrive in the island after 8.30am.
Alderney Airport will also close at 6pm on Thursday, however flights to and from the island may be subject to weather disruption earlier in the day.
Guernsey Ports Airport Director, Richard Thomasson, said the airport was activating its contingency plans, with the help of airlines and others.
“Severe weather events obviously pose particular challenges for air travel, and our priority first and foremost is the safety of the travelling public, as well as that of our own staff.
“Working with our airline partners and other stakeholders, we have agreed a plan that will keep everyone safe, but also minimise disruption and ensure operations return to normal as quickly as possible.”
The States will issue further updates today.
