The States of Guernsey is introducing a new training course for managers to better support employees experiencing menopause, as part of this year's Menopause Awareness Month.

The organisation, one of the largest employers on the island, will offer 'Understanding Menopause at Work: Awareness, Support & Practical Solutions' to managers working in the public service. The short course provides an up-to-date overview of menopause and its associated symptoms, alongside practical guidance on recognising symptoms, identifying workplace impact and taking supportive action.

Menopause is a natural stage of life that typically affects women in midlife, though the timing varies for each individual. It can have a significant impact on physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, family life and work. Common symptoms include hot flushes, sleep disturbance, anxiety, low mood, brain fog, joint pain and changes in energy levels.

Public Health has emphasised that every woman's experience differs, with some requiring little support whilst others face substantial challenges. The department is using Menopause Awareness Month to raise awareness of this important health issue.

Anita Gaudion, head of human resources and organisational development at the States of Guernsey, said: "We are delighted to be offering this course to our managers as part of the wider wellbeing agenda. Managers play an integral role in providing support for their team and we hope that the participants find the course informative and useful."

Dr Nicola Brink, director of public health, said: "Let's make menopause a topic we talk about openly, respectfully and confidently, helping every woman in the Bailiwick to thrive. Raising awareness of menopause is an important public health issue. By encouraging open conversations and improving understanding, we can help women recognise symptoms earlier, access appropriate support, and continue to thrive at home, in their communities, and in the workplace."

Public Health has stressed that menopause is not simply a women's issue, but a community issue. Supporting women through this transition can improve wellbeing, help people remain active in work and community life, and contribute to healthier outcomes across the islands.

Women can take many positive steps to manage menopause, including healthy lifestyle choices, regular physical activity and good sleep habits. Where appropriate, medical treatments such as hormone replacement therapy are available. Access to accurate information and trusted healthcare advice is considered essential.

Island residents can access information and support through their GP, as well as various local and national health services.

Free psychological support is available through Healthy Minds, whilst Guernsey Mind offers mental wellbeing and supported self-help services for coping with stress, anxiety or low mood during midlife transitions, including a specific menopause pathway.

Additional resources include guidance from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the British Menopause Society, the NHS, Women's Health Concern and the Daisy Network.
