A popular initiative bringing sport into an unusual venue returns to Guernsey this month, with cheerleading, squash, table tennis and boxing set to take over the top floor of the Guille-Allès Library.

Sport in the Library, a joint project by the Guille-Allès Library and Sports Commission, will run for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday 21st November between 10am and 2pm.

The free event will transform spaces typically occupied by bookshelves and desks into sporting areas, with activities designed for all ages and abilities.

'This will be the fourth year that sport takes over the top floor of the library and we love to think outside the box about what activities we can include,' said Nicky Will from the Sports Commission.

'The weather in November can often restrict the opportunity for people to be active but thanks to the support of the Library we are going to be offering some fun indoor sporting activities for all ages and abilities right in the heart of the Town.'

Library staff have welcomed the return of the event following strong attendance in previous years.

'We could not believe how busy we were again last year,' said Jackie Burgess, Community and Wellbeing Lead for the Guille-Allès.

Ms Burgess said supporting health and wellbeing forms a key part of the library's mission, and organisers hope the event will demonstrate that sport is accessible to all and can be played anywhere.

'We will also be encouraging both children and adults to pick up a book with an area set aside for reading and exploring some of the sports books we have available,' said Jackie.

The event will utilise rooms on the library's top floor, including the Hayward Room, where coaches and children from Sarnia Legacy Cheerleading group will give children of all ages the opportunity to try cheerleading.

Guernsey Squash will use rebound walls to introduce participants to the racquet sport, whilst Guernsey Boxing returns for the fourth consecutive year. The Guernsey Table Tennis Association will support mini table tennis tables set up using library furniture.

'We are delighted that some of our member sports have risen to the occasion once again to join us for this year's event,' said Nicky.

The event is free to attend and no booking is required.
