Sixth Form Centre move put on ice
- Education, Sport & Culture has revised plans for the Sixth Form Centre at Les Ozouets Campus.
- Foundations for the centre, initially scheduled for Autumn 2026, will no longer be laid as part of Phase 1.
- The decision aims to preserve flexibility and avoid unnecessary financial exposure.
- Ongoing reviews will determine the future location, scope, and timing of post-16 provision.
- The Committee emphasised that the decision does not signify the abandonment of the Sixth Form Centre project.
Education, Sport & Culture has decided to delay installing the foundations for a new Sixth Form Centre at Les Ozouets Campus.
Foundations were due to be installed in the Autumn at an estimated cost of £136,000, it said.
It stressed that this decision was primarily focused on financial and construction management, saying that it does not indicate a commitment against developing a new Sixth Form Centre.
The Committee has pinpointed some key considerations that led to the decision to overturn its predecessor’s plans.
Firstly, laying the foundations at this stage would restrict the project's future flexibility, particularly as updated strategic decisions about the building's design and location are still in process.
Additionally, without a synchronized schedule, there is a risk that prolonged periods between foundation installation and subsequent construction could lead to degradation of materials.
Furthermore, involving different contractors for separate phases could complicate contractual liabilities.
President Deputy Paul Montague said: “The Committee has made this decision to protect public funds and maintain flexibility. It simply would have been non-sensical to push on with installing the foundations for the Sixth Form building before the Committee has fully reviewed decisions about the location of the Sixth Form Centre.”
He added: “This boils down to not spending money - £136,000 to be exact- on something which may have degraded or ended up not being fit for purpose or indeed never used.”
There are no definitive timelines for the project at this stage.
The Sixth Form Centre was moved out of a purpose built facility at Les Varendes to a temporary new home at the former La Mare de Carteret High School in September.
