The official trials for 'school streets' at St Sampson's High School and Les Beaucamps High School are set to begin from Monday 1st December.
The primary objective is to enhance safety for students and staff while encouraging more sustainable modes of transport, such as walking and cycling.
The trials will involve the closure of La Vieille Rue and Ruette des Delisles to regular traffic during designated times on weekdays.
La Vieille Rue will be closed from 8am to 8:30am and from 2:45pm to 3:30pm, accommodating students cycling from Hautes Capelles Primary School.
Ruette des Delisles will be closed from 8am to 8:30am and from 3:00pm to 3:30pm. Access will still be granted to cyclists, emergency vehicles, and residents needing access to properties not including the schools.
This initiative follows the successful informal trials conducted earlier in the school term.
Traffic and Highway Services will closely monitor the scheme's implementation over the 12-month trial period and subsequently present findings to the Environment & Infrastructure committee, which will determine if the scheme will be made permanent.
Feedback from the school community - including students, staff, parents or guardians, and nearby residents - is strongly encouraged.
Interested parties can provide feedback via email at traffic@gov.gg or in writing to Traffic and Highway Services, Edward T Wheadon House, Le Truchot, St Peter Port, GY1 3WH before 1st September 2026.
Additional details about the scheme and consultation processes are available at www.gov.gg/trafficconsultations.
Paul James, Road Safety Officer at Traffic and Highway Services, said: "After a successful informal trial for each school, we’re pleased the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure has approved us moving onto an official trial phase.
"It brings us a step closer to implementing permanent School Streets for two of the island’s secondary schools and is another huge step forward in encouraging greater use of alternative transport on our roads."
Vicky Godley, Principal of St Sampson’s High School, said: “Our current School Street trial proved remarkably successful – serving to empower our students to be more independent, improve their physical and mental health, and reduce their carbon footprint.
"I’m delighted this initiative has progressed to the next phase as we look to further encourage the use of active travel throughout the remainder of the academic year."
Martin Haimes, Principal of Les Beaucamps High School, added, “By trialling our School Street we're not only hoping to enhance road safety for our students, we’re also fostering a greater sense of community and a more sustainable future for them as well.
"I look forward to observing the results of this official trial and would welcome feedback from users throughout the trial period."
