La Houguette Primary School is preparing to mark half a century since it first opened, with 19th November 2026 representing 50 years of education in the western parishes.
The school, which serves St Pierre du Bois, St Saviour and Torteval, opened in 1976 and brought together primary-level education for the three western parishes for the first time, creating a unified educational community that has served generations of island families.
The school site features a nature reserve and houses a Second World War German bunker, which is occasionally used as a living-history classroom for pupils.
Claire Judd, headteacher of La Houguette Primary School, said: "Reaching our 50th anniversary is an extraordinarily proud moment for everyone connected with La Houguette. Over the last five decades, our school has provided a warm, dynamic and nurturing environment where thousands of children from across the western parishes have taken their first steps in education. While we are immensely proud of our rich heritage - from our wonderful nature reserve to our historical classroom bunker - our greatest strength has always been our vibrant school community. We are excited to celebrate this incredible milestone throughout the coming year with our pupils, families, staff and alumni, both past and present."

For five decades, the school has been much more than a place of learning. It has been an important part of the community in the western parishes, educating generations of islanders. The year-long celebrations will begin with a 50th anniversary bonfire night party on Friday 6th November on the school's grounds.
Further events and activities will be announced throughout the academic year, giving current pupils, former pupils, staff, families and the wider community opportunities to celebrate the school's history and future.
The school plans to compile a 50th anniversary memory book as part of the celebrations. Former pupils, teachers and others connected with La Houguette, particularly those from the 1970s through to the early 2000s, are encouraged to share photographs, memories and stories by emailing [email protected]. Alumni can also visit the school office to write in the memory book.
