A team of independent international election observers has arrived in Guernsey in preparation for the General Election scheduled for Wednesday 18th June.
This marks the first ever island-wide Election Observation Mission, organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association British Islands and Mediterranean Region.
The mission consists of eight observers, including three parliamentarians from Saint Lucia, Scotland, and Montserrat, alongside two election experts and three staff members from CPA UK. Leading up to polling day, the observers will engage with election officials, candidates, and local groups to acquire insights into the electoral process and the unique context surrounding this election. On the day of voting, the team is set to visit every polling station multiple times to ensure comprehensive oversight.
Members of the public who wish to share their election experiences can contact the mission at cpabimr@parliament.uk.
This initiative represents the second invitation extended to CPA BIMR by the Guernsey States’ Assembly & Constitution Committee to conduct an election observation mission. The previous mission, associated with the 2020 election, was conducted virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions, making this the first in-person international observation.
After the election day proceedings, a preliminary statement detailing the mission's initial observations will be published on 20th June. Subsequently, a comprehensive final report outlining detailed findings and recommendations will be made available two months later.
The Head of Mission, Hon. Alvina Reynolds, President of the Senate of Saint Lucia, expressed the importance of election observation: “Election observation plays an important role in strengthening democracies around the world.
"I am delighted that our international team of independent observers has been invited to Guernsey for this upcoming General Election. We have a packed schedule to meet with those who play a part in Guernsey’s elections, including candidates, election officials, and community groups.”
She encouraged voters to connect with the mission by sharing their observations, engaging with the observers at campaign events or polling stations wearing hi-vis vests marked Election Observer.
