Guernsey is embarking on a significant transformation of its currency, with an invitation extended to artists, designers, and creative agencies to inject fresh creativity into the design of the island's banknotes.

This project led by the States of Guernsey aims to introduce new banknotes by 2027, marking the first overhaul since the 1990s.

Focused on local talents or those with a strong connection to Guernsey, the initiative seeks to align the physical currency with contemporary advancements and aesthetic perspectives.

The shift from paper to polymer notes is central to this initiative. The scarcity of suitable paper, accentuated by the closure of paper mills, necessitates the transition, ensuring the new notes align with global trends towards durability and security.

Bethan Haines, the States Treasurer overseeing the project, said: "This is a unique opportunity for artists designers and creative agencies to have their ideas for new banknotes become part of our cultural heritage in the years to come. It has been some 30 years since our notes were last redesigned and now is the right time to update them."

Interested individuals are invited to request a creative brief, providing detailed submission guidelines and requirements. The process from concept submission to the final banknote production involves collaboration with De La Rue design team. Guernsey Museum is concurrently featuring an exhibit on Bailiwick Banknotes, offering the public a chance to explore the historical context and evolution of the island's currency.
