The Guernsey Cheshire Home is actively seeking the support of land and property owners as it explores options for the future development of a new Cheshire Home.

This initiative is part of a long-term vision that will not impact the daily operations of the existing Home.

Since its inception in 1987, the Guernsey Cheshire Home has played a crucial role in offering residential care for individuals living with significant physical disabilities.

This includes residents with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, spinal injuries, and the long-term effects of accidents, providing care for those who are unable to live independently.

The Home, based in Shorncliffe, Rohais, has been dedicated to creating a supportive environment tailored to younger individuals with disabilities. This vision was initiated over three decades ago by a group of local pioneers who recognised a gap in care provision at that time.

The current facilities, which support 11 full-time residents and provide respite accommodation, are designed to foster a family-like atmosphere where individuals can decorate and personalise their own rooms.

Residents are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that promote independence and a rewarding lifestyle, differentiating their experiences from traditional clinical settings.

The care provided includes vital medical support from registered nurses and posture specialists, along with accessible transportation options for social outings and medical appointments.

As the organisation looks ahead, the Board of Directors is reviewing strategies to ensure the facility remains adaptable and able to meet the evolving needs of the community.

In this context, the Home's chairman, Rob Shepherd, said: “Our priority has always been, and will always be, our residents.

"We want to ensure they continue to receive not only the very best care, but that they do so in a home that is truly fit for purpose.

"A great deal has changed in the 40 years we have called Shorncliffe home, both in terms of care standards and the needs of those we support.”

The Home faces funding challenges, requiring £1.5 million each year to maintain high-quality care without receiving direct government support.

All operating costs must be covered through various fundraising efforts, supported by the generosity of local businesses and community members.

In light of its long-term planning, the charity appeals to property owners with viable land to aid in constructing a purpose-built Cheshire Home.

Those interested in contributing to this initiative are encouraged to reach out confidentially to discuss potential opportunities.
