Representatives from Guernsey joined counterparts from Jersey, Alderney, Sark and La Manche at the 2026 Normandy Summit, hosted by Hervé Morin, President of the Normandy region of France.

The summit, held at Caen University on 2 October 2026, focused on key areas including energy and the environment, maritime links, immigration, sea rescue, and preparations for the Millennium 2027 celebrations.

The gathering provided an opportunity to review and celebrate the Channel Islands' ties with their nearest European neighbours, a decade after the reunification of the Normandy region.

Attendees also praised the recent listing of the D-Day Landing Beaches as a UNESCO World Heritage site, marking a significant recognition of the region's historical importance.

A major topic of discussion was the Millennium 2027 European Year of the Normans, described as one of the biggest celebrations in Normandy and Europe in the last decade. Guernsey will participate alongside Normandy, Jersey, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Flanders and Puglia/Sicily, with the Norman heritage flag to be flown across Europe throughout 2027 and beyond.

Deputy Lindsay De Sausmarez, Guernsey's Chief Minister, said: "The Normandy Summit reaffirms the value of strong regional partnerships and enduring relationships with our nearest European neighbours - and it's not just about good inter-governmental and trade relationships, but also about our deep rooted cultural ties. The Millenium celebrations in 2027 will be a great opportunity to showcase and enjoy our common heritage that continues to unite our islands with partners across Normandy. Guernsey looks forward to hosting the Summit then in what will be an important year for us all."

Guernsey is set to host the next Normandy Summit in 2027, coinciding with the Millennium celebrations that will mark the Norman heritage shared across multiple European nations.
