A Guernsey charity is promoting a month-long walking challenge to raise vital funds while encouraging islanders to explore the island's countryside.

Grow Green Miles begins on Friday 1 May and asks participants to walk at least one mile every day throughout the month. The annual fundraising initiative is open to individuals, families, businesses and local groups.

With over 30 walks to choose from, the challenge offers routes ranging from south coast cliff paths and the green lanes of St Martin to rarely visited corners of L'Ancresse Common. Accessible walks will be clearly highlighted, though participants are welcome to choose their own favourite routes.

The month begins with a walk from Grow followed by a celebratory BBQ, and concludes on Sunday 31 May with a final walk and summer craft market – providing opportunities for participants to celebrate together.

Mandy Mackelworth, Grow's general manager, announced an exciting partnership with the Nature Commission. "Commission teams will be leading a series of 'look out' walks which will add to the interest," she said. "Their mission - to connect the community with nature fits perfectly with the spirit of Grow Green Miles. Everyone taking part will be invited to spot unusual plants, birds and wildlife that make our island so special."

Jessi Jennings, CEO of The Nature Commission, said: "The Nature Commission is delighted to be part of the Grow Green Miles initiative - encouraging the community of Guernsey to spend time outside in nature while also spotting wildlife is a brilliant way to build understanding of the importance of our natural environment and show that everyone can take part in looking after it. We are excited to be providing a few guided walks to highlight some of our species, so look out for those."

Participants are encouraged to photograph unexpected discoveries – hidden paths, blossoming hedgerows, or previously unnoticed views – and share them on social media by tagging Grow, creating a living map of Guernsey's hidden gems.

Grow supports adults with learning disabilities to build confidence, independence and life skills. With annual running costs of around £800,000, organisers say every mile walked and every pound raised makes a real difference to the charity's work.

Entry costs £15 for adults, £5 for children, £30 for a family of five, or £150 for a corporate team of ten. Registration is available at grow.gg/grow-news/grow-green-miles.
