A local charity has appealed to the public for help after discovering that plants and gardening materials worth an estimated £700 appear to have been taken from its site over the weekend without payment.

Grow, which supports adults with learning disabilities and learning difficulties, reported that the missing items include two hanging baskets, Hebes, Campanula, Primroses, Heathers and other plants, as well as woodchip and compost.

The charity has traditionally operated an honesty-based system at its plant sales area, allowing customers to purchase items and make payment using an honesty box or a SumUp machine. Grow has said it is keen to maintain this arrangement, which relies on the goodwill and integrity of the community.

General Manager Mandy Mackelworth said: 'We are extremely disappointed by what has happened. Every plant we sell represents time, care and hard work by our Crew, who take great pride in growing and looking after the stock. As a charity, we work hard to make every penny count, and a loss of this value is particularly upsetting.'

She added: 'We have always wanted to operate on a basis of trust and make it easy for people to support us by purchasing our plants. We would very much like to continue doing that, but we need people to respect the system and recognise that taking items without paying has a direct impact on our work.'

Grow has CCTV on site and will be reviewing the footage to establish what happened over the weekend.

The charity is giving anyone who may have taken plants or materials without paying an opportunity to put matters right. Payment can be made by placing money in the honesty box, which is a painted milk churn, or using the SumUp payment facility on site.

Grow thanked its many loyal customers who continue to support the charity and respect its honesty-based system. Their custom helps fund the charity's work supporting adults with learning disabilities and learning difficulties to develop skills, confidence and opportunities for the future.
