  • The French identity card scheme in the Bailiwick will continue into the 2026 season.
  • This extension aims to strengthen cultural ties between the Bailiwick and regions of France.
  • The initiative has positively impacted tourism numbers in Guernsey.
  • French nationals can visit the Bailiwick using valid ID cards for day trips on specific sea services.
  • Legislative changes will accompany the extension to accommodate Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETAs) in 2026.

Home Affairs has confirmed the extension of the French identity card scheme to the 2026 season.

This scheme aims to enhance cultural connections between the Bailiwick and parts of France, notably Normandy and Brittany, while promoting tourism by offering easier access.

Under the current scheme, French nationals can travel to the Bailiwick using their valid identity cards for day trips.

This arrangement works only on scheduled sea services from France, provided the carrier has coordinated with the Guernsey Border Agency to ensure compliance with guidelines.

In association with this extension, Home Affairs will undertake legislative modifications to support the continuation of this scheme following the implementation of Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETAs) in early 2026.

Deputy Marc Leadbeater, President of the committee, said: “I’m very pleased to be able to make this announcement. The benefits of the scheme, particularly now in conjunction with Brittany Ferries, have been clear to see in Guernsey’s tourism statistics published so far this year.”

French ferry passenger numbers have risen significantly this year, up by 45% to 106,746 as of the end of September.

The most significant increase is on the St Malo route, which saw a 49% rise in September - an additional 3,404 travellers - and a 51% increase year-on-year, equating to an additional 32,753 passengers.

Visit Guernsey has said that this surge is largely driven by Brittany Ferries’ updated schedule.

UK numbers are also up slightly in the year to date, 3% or an additional 3,730 to 115,652.
