Free mile series aims to help over 50s stay active and healthy
- Healthcare Group Masters Mile Series is returning for a second year
- Free entry for anyone over 50 to walk, jog or run a mile in a friendly, supportive atmosphere
- Series begins on Sunday morning at Cambridge Park
The Healthcare Group Masters Mile is returning for its second year to encourage over 50s to walk, jog or run this iconic distance through the summer.
It consists of three free events for all abilities, plus a big social aspect.
The series encourages participants to challenge themselves in a friendly environment with an introductory mile event at Beau Sejour before heading to the road and finally the track.
Dr Vicky Carre, Healthcare Group GP, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be sponsoring the Healthcare Group Masters Mile for the second year in a row.
“The series is a fantastic way to promote staying active and healthy, and proves that running over 50 isn’t just possible, it’s hugely positive for both physical and mental wellbeing.
“There was such a good turnout last year and it’s great to see the series becoming a firm fixture in Guernsey’s sporting calendar. We hope this year’s events will inspire even more islanders to challenge themselves and get involved.”
Last year the oldest participant was 84, the youngest had only just celebrated their 50th birthday.
The first event is on Sunday 20 July around a ‘Royal mile’ course that was a firm favourite in 2024, based around Cambridge Park.
The second takes place at the Healthcare Group Vazon Mile on Thursday 21 August, a classic Guernsey course on the west coast where participants will mix in with some ‘youngsters’ as part of races based on everyone’s ability.
The season finale is at the new Festival of Miles on the running track at Footes Lane on Sunday 21 September.
Guernsey Athletics’ endurance director Chris Gillman said: “Guernsey Athletics is delighted that the Healthcare Group Masters’ Mile Series is returning for a second year.
“This is an ideal opportunity for anyone over 50, regardless of ability, to come and join in. Running should be accessible to people of all ages and hopefully this will provide the ideal incentive for those looking at ways to stay active, whether they are beginning their journey or thinking about alternatives to what they are currently doing.”
