# Free map published to understand solar panel suitability

A free online map has been launched to help Guernsey householders determine how suitable their roofs are for solar panel installation, as the island works towards renewable energy targets.

Digimap has collaborated with the States of Guernsey to produce the colour-coded map, which shows the amount of light solar panels would receive on the island's rooftops throughout the year. Roof spaces with higher potential to generate electricity through solar panels appear as dark red, while those with lower potential show as dark blue.

The initiative forms part of the Electricity Strategy agreed by the States in 2023, which set a clear strategic direction for Guernsey to pursue additional interconnection whilst increasing locally generated energy from renewable sources such as solar power.

At the end of 2025, Guernsey had solar photovoltaic installations exceeding 4MW, with additional solar products installed since then. However, the island is targeting 10MW by 2028, with the intention for this to continue increasing. On-island renewable energy generation is therefore a key component of Guernsey's energy future.

The free version of the map does not account for overshadowing from trees or neighbouring properties. A more complex and detailed map suitable for those who design and install renewable energy systems can be purchased from Digimap. Both maps only account for rooftop solar generation, as opposed to ground-based solar generation.

The project began after renewable energy provider Little Green approached Environment & Infrastructure to highlight the benefits of such a tool for people considering solar panel installation.

Simon de la Rue, Commercial Director at Little Green, said: "Orientation is one of the biggest factors in how much a solar system actually produces. We raised the need for a tool like this with the Committee and Digimap because, as the market grows, islanders shouldn't have to take our word for it - or any installer's - on what their roof can deliver. This map gives them an independent, objective check, so any quote can be held to it."

Tim Stonebridge, Managing Director of Digimap Limited, said: "Digimap is pleased to have been approached by Little Green to help create a resource that benefits the whole community. This project was particularly rewarding to contribute to, as it not only highlights how mapping can be used to visualise data, but has also made a tangible contribution to supporting the Electricity Strategy."

He added: "Digimap were pleased to use its sophisticated tools and expertise to interpret the latest States of Guernsey Digital Surface Model and building data to derive the slope and aspect of every roof shape."

Deputy Adrian Gabriel, President of Environment & Infrastructure, said: "As we get about 30-35% more sunshine than the UK average, this free tool makes us well placed to understand how we can better take advantage of the energy we can harness from the sun."

He added: "While we'd always encourage islanders to contact trusted professionals before embarking on installing solar panels, this is a really helpful tool to get an initial idea on whether the potential for solar is there for householders. It's clear that there is a significant opportunity in our island, and this map might just be the catalyst to take Guernsey's solar generation to the next level."
