Free fruit snack fuels young sailors at The Sailing Trust

- Children at The Sailing Trust enjoyed free fruit snacks this summer.
- The initiative follows a successful trial funded by the Health Improvement Commission.
- Over 600 portions of fruit were distributed over six weeks.
- The initiative is encouraged for other sports and youth settings.
The Sailing Trust in Guernsey has resumed its initiative of providing free fruit snacks to children and young people this summer, following a positive trial in 2024 supported by the Health Improvement Commission.
This initiative aims to enhance children's nutrition alongside their participation in sailing activities.
Sarah Creasey, Principal of the Guernsey Sailing Trust, said: “The fruit was very well received, and we had very minimal waste.
"The best feedback we had was hearing the younger pond sailors be so excited about the fact that they could have the fruit, and it was free. It was great to see children excited by and choosing to eat the fruit.”
Throughout the six weeks of the summer programme, more than 600 portions of fruit were delivered, allowing children and young people access to nutritious snacks while engaging in sailing activities.
Cat Tyrrell, the Eat Well Officer at the Health Improvement Commission, expressed her support for the initiative:
“It’s really encouraging to see a sports setting look to make changes to better support children’s health and nutrition. Through funding this trial, we’ve all been able to see the benefits and how easily something like this can be made a regular feature despite having limited space and resources within the setting.”
The Health Improvement Commission encourages other sports or youth organisations interested in similar programmes that support children’s health to reach out for guidance.
