Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service extinguished a fire at Mont Cuet landfill site on Monday night after a batch of processed garden waste material overheated.

The incident did not affect the adjacent Household Green Waste Site, with both facilities operating normally today.

Garden waste material from households and commercial operators is processed at Mont Cuet to produce soil conditioner.

The process involves shredding the material and leaving it in piles, known as windrows, to naturally decompose over approximately three months.

Heat is generated as the organic material breaks down, and to reduce fire risk, the windrows are regularly turned to prevent temperature build-up. Yesterday's fire is believed to have occurred in a windrow that was due to be turned.

The fire involved approximately 30m x 10m of green waste.

Crews operated four mainline jets to extinguish the fire, working closely with site staff who used plant equipment to turn over the material and assist firefighting operations.

No equipment at the landfill site was damaged and there were no injuries reported.
