The Dementia Friendly Festival will return to Saumarez Park on Saturday 6th September, from midday to 5pm.
Organised by Dementia Friendly Guernsey, the annual festival will take place in the National Trust Folk and Costume Courtyard, featuring a range of musical performances designed to create an inclusive experience for people living with dementia and their carers.
Performers for this year’s event include Mike Le Huray, Singing from the Heart Community Choir, John Le Sauvage, Charlie Sherbourne and the Nightbirds, and Clameur de Haro. This varied line-up aims to cater to different musical preferences among attendees, providing a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
Guy Mitchell, organiser of the festival and trustee of Dementia Friendly Guernsey, said: “Building on the success of the previous years we are planning to continue to host the event annually and have a great line up again this year.”
He emphasised that the event is focused on delivering dementia-friendly performances that allow individuals living with dementia to enjoy music with their families, friends, and carers.
The festival will include modifications to ensure comfort for attendees, such as the option to come and go during performances and reduced volume levels to create a more soothing atmosphere. The choice of venue, the National Trust courtyard, not only enhances the event experience but also allows free access to the Folk and Costume Museum, offering further enjoyment for attendees.
Julie Bulpitt, coordinator and trustee, said: “We are especially pleased to be working with the National Trust of Guernsey who are making their Folk and Costume Museum available to us for the afternoon and to Highfield House Care Home for their generous sponsorship of the costs allowing us to make this a free event for those living with dementia, their families and carers.”
The organisers are interested in forming a choir for the event and encourage those wishing to participate to reach out.
Due to the limited capacity of the Courtyard, timely booking of tickets is recommended, which can be completed through Eventbrite.
