Creative professionals from across Guernsey will gather later this month to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on the creative industries, both locally and internationally.
The event, titled AI and the Creative Industries, will take place on 27 October from 12pm to 1.30pm at the Frossard Theatre at Guernsey Museum. It forms part of the Chamber of Commerce's AI - All In Sprint, an island-wide programme running from 1 October to 12 November.
The discussion will bring together an experienced panel working across filmmaking, journalism, writing, fashion design, brand and creative communications, and digital arts.
The session aims to look beyond the headlines surrounding AI to explore how the technology is being used by creative professionals today and where it is creating new opportunities, as well as examining the questions and challenges it presents for the industry.
Rebecca Booth, CEO of Guernsey Arts, the umbrella organisation supporting all arts sectors across the Bailiwick, will moderate the panel.
"AI is already having an impact across every area of the creative industries, but the conversation is often dominated by either excitement or concern," said Booth.
"This event provides an opportunity to have an informed and practical discussion with people working in our creative industries.
"We want to explore what AI means for creativity in Guernsey, how creative professionals are using it today and how we can make sure that innovation complements rather than diminishes human creativity."
The panel will include Tom Langford, partner at Channel Islands creative agency Potting Shed, whose career spans brand, strategy and creative communications. Langford is particularly interested in how technology is changing the way creative businesses think, work and deliver.
Kay Davidson, a womenswear designer, sustainability advocate and speaker with more than 30 years' experience in the fashion and clothing industry, will also join the discussion. Trained in Savile Row tailoring and clothing textile science, Davidson has designed business wear and corporate clothing collections for leading international brands.
Nick Mann, co-founder and editor of The Quarry, who works independently at the interface of journalism and AI, will contribute a perspective on how the technology is affecting media and journalism.
Warren Mauger, journalist, filmmaker and owner of Spike Productions, brings 30 years' experience across television, radio and commercial production in the Channel Islands and internationally. Mauger is also a co-founder of The Quarry.
Charlie Towers, lecturer in Creative and Digital Arts at The Guernsey Institute, will provide an educational perspective on the rapidly changing creative and digital landscape.
The event will consider the practical applications of AI across different creative disciplines, including how professionals are incorporating new tools into their existing workflows. It will also examine the implications for skills, jobs, creativity and the future of the industry.
The AI - All In Sprint, led by the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, aims to bring together businesses and organisations to explore the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence and encourage practical conversations about its impact on the workplace and wider economy.
The creative industries are considered an important part of this conversation, with AI increasingly influencing everything from the development of ideas and creation of content to design, production, communication and distribution.
The 27 October event will begin with a light lunch at 12pm, provided by Artisan Catering, followed by an introduction and panel discussion at 12.30pm. The session will conclude at 1.30pm.
The event is open to anyone interested in creativity, technology and the future of the creative industries, including artists, designers, filmmakers, writers, creative businesses, students and those simply interested in understanding how AI is changing the way we create. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.
