# Community cinema event to mark World Homeless Day in Guernsey

Action for Children's Guernsey Youth & Housing Project and Caritas Guernsey are inviting the community to mark World Homeless Day by attending a special cinema event exploring homelessness through film.

Taking place on Saturday 10 October 2026, the World Homeless Day Cinema event will feature four films shown across four screens, all connected by the theme of homelessness. The event aims to encourage greater understanding of the causes and impact of homelessness while creating an opportunity for people to reflect and start conversations about an issue affecting communities locally and worldwide.

Entry to the event is free, with advance booking required. Guests will also be able to donate in support of Action Mentoring, which helps local young people at risk of homelessness access trusted adult volunteers for support and guidance.

The event has been sponsored by The Bachmann Group and Mallard Cinema, whose support has enabled the community screening to take place on World Homeless Day.

Aaron Davies, service manager for Action for Children Guernsey, said: "Film has a unique ability to tell stories, we hope it will build understanding and encourage empathy. By bringing the community together through cinema, we hope to create meaningful conversations about homelessness this world homeless day and raise awareness of the support available locally. Most importantly, we want people to understand that homelessness can affect anyone and that early support can make a significant difference."

While homelessness is often associated with rough sleeping, the reality can be much broader. Many young people experience hidden forms of homelessness, including sofa surfing, unstable accommodation and family breakdown, all of which can leave them vulnerable and in need of support.

Through its work across the Bailiwick, Action for Children's Guernsey Youth & Housing Project supports young people affected by homelessness and works to prevent homelessness before it occurs. The project delivers programmes across the community in areas including substance use, living skills, leaving care, employment and isolation.

Graham Merfield, from Caritas Guernsey, said: "We are pleased to partner with Action for Children on this event because raising awareness and understanding of homelessness is an important part of tackling it, particularly when so much homelessness remains hidden. World Homeless Day provides a valuable opportunity to remind our community that homelessness can happen to anyone, and that with the right support at the right time, lives can be changed and homelessness prevented."

Caritas works to restore dignity and foster community for those most vulnerable in Guernsey, with a primary goal of eliminating homelessness and addressing social exclusion. The charity supports islanders who find themselves without a home due to unforeseen circumstances such as job loss, separation, illness or addiction.

Henry Row, manager at The Mallard Cinema, said: "We chose to support Action for Children and their event in partnership with Caritas because we believe every child deserves a safe, secure and happy childhood. Through these films, we hope to raise awareness and support the vital work they do for vulnerable children and families in our community around the issue of homelessness."

Liz Powell, HR and operations director at The Bachmann Group, said: "We believe that everyone deserves support, compassion and the chance to thrive. Sponsoring this free cinema day is a meaningful way for us to recognise World Homelessness Day and stand alongside organisations such as Action for Children and Caritas, who work tirelessly to support both young people and the vulnerable in our community. We hope this event not only provides an enjoyable experience for attendees but also encourages greater awareness and understanding of homelessness."

Deputy Garry Collins, homeless lead for the States of Guernsey, said: "World Homeless Day is an important event to draw attention to the needs of people experiencing homelessness and to promote local community events. As the Homelessness lead on the Committee for Housing, it's important to highlight especially during this housing crisis. I am delighted that a number of projects to increase affordable homes for Islanders are now in the pipeline this term. We are delighted to work with Action for Children and Caritas on this project and once again, my thanks to all involved on the continuing outstanding support they provide to our community."
