The Guernsey Museum at Candie will host a significant new exhibition, "Chris George - 50 Years of Faces," from 4 October to 31 December.
This exhibition celebrates the distinguished career of local photographer Chris George, affectionately known as 'Georgie.'
George has been capturing the essence and spirit of the Bailiwick of Guernsey for over fifty years.
Throughout his career, he has documented thousands of islanders, visitors, places, and events.
The exhibition will present a chosen selection of photographs from his extensive archive along with personal anecdotes, providing visitors with a unique insight into both his work and experiences.
Key highlights of the exhibition include images from Chris's tenure as a newspaper photographer. In addition, attendees can view a slideshow featuring more than 100 extra images and explore interactive iPads containing original newspaper stories related to his work.
In 2023, the museum first approached George about creating a retrospective.
"I left school to work as a photographic trainee in 1975, so a retrospective in 2025 felt like the right milestone moment for an exhibition. Back when I was starting out, there was no social media or internet - photographs were central to broadsheet media and often the main way people received their news."
He continued, “As well as being a highly nostalgic view of 50 years of photographs, I believe that people relate to people, and that's my hope for why they'll connect with this exhibition. From half a million archive images, I've chosen my favourites - and some of them have never been seen before."
Helen Glencross, Head of Culture & Heritage Services, said: “We are extremely grateful to Chris, who has spent a huge amount of time and energy on this project. He has been incredibly generous in sharing both his images and memories. We are proud to showcase his career and the impact that he has had in documenting Guernsey life over the decades.”
Exhibition opening hours are from 10am - 5pm daily, closing at 4pm from 3 November
Normal admission applies; entry is free with a Discovery Pass.
