Caritas has received planning permission for the installation of two emergency sleeping pods in Guernsey, marking a significant advancement in support for islanders facing homelessness.
The pods are approved for an initial duration of two years, pending a further application, and are will accommodate individuals for a maximum of seven consecutive nights, or up to 30 nights within a calendar year.

This limitation by Planning ensures that the pods serve their intended role as temporary emergency accommodation, providing safety and dignity as longer-term housing solutions are explored.
The arrival of the pods is anticipated in October, coinciding with the onset of the winter season, providing an essential resource for those in need.
“We are very pleased with this decision, which marks the beginning of a new chapter in our efforts to support people without secure accommodation,” said Graham Merfield, Chair of Caritas.
He emphasised that while the pods are not a permanent solution, they offer immediate shelter for those in urgent need.
Furthermore, he highlighted that this initiative is a foundational step toward the organisation's broader vision of establishing a community of modular homes, which aims to afford individuals the opportunity to rebuild their lives with stability and hope.
Caritas extends its appreciation to the Vale Douzaine, the community of supporters, and StudiO, the architect firm that assisted throughout the planning process.
Moving forward, Caritas is eager to collaborate with volunteers, businesses, and community partners to ensure the successful management and upkeep of the pods.
This collaboration aims to maintain a safe, welcoming environment for users.
