Brittany Ferries has announced a notable increase in passenger travel to and from Guernsey during the first season of its new contract with the States.
From 1 April to 31 August, the ferry company reported an overall increase of 28.9% in passenger numbers compared to the same period in 2024, representing an additional 38,522 travellers.
The most impressive growth was seen on the St Malo route, which recorded a 59.2% increase in traffic. This success has enabled Guernsey to capture over 40% of the Channel Islands market, markedly up from just 20% in the previous year.
Brittany Ferries' Chief Executive, Christophe Mathieu, expressed satisfaction with the results, stating, “It is fantastic to see this improvement compared to last year and encouraging that the growth has been consistent across the whole of this summer."
He noted that the increase in visitor numbers and extended stays are benefiting not only Guernsey but the wider Bailiwick as well.
The company's revised schedules featuring more frequent sailings and improved timings have been received positively. Mathieu expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Visit Guernsey in marketing the region.
Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, President of Economic Development, highlighted the significance of the increase, stating, "It is incredibly positive to see such strong growth in ferry passengers across all routes, bringing more than 38,500 visitors to Guernsey."
Deputy Kazantseva-Miller remarked that this surge is advantageous not just for the tourism sector but also for various other industries within the Bailiwick.
With an aim to foster stronger connections with Brittany and France, the Committee for Economic Development plans to explore opportunities in trade and tourism, among others.
Deputy Kazantseva-Miller stated her enthusiasm for upcoming meetings in St Malo to initiate collaborative efforts.
Mathieu further remarked on the rising trend of visitors opting for sea travel as part of their holiday experience, announcing that an almost identical schedule for the following year has already been made available, valid until 2 November 2026.
