  • The Better Journeys Project has introduced a Fund for Schools.
  • Grants of up to £3,000 in Guernsey and £1,500 in Jersey are available.
  • The fund aims to improve active travel infrastructure for pupils.
  • Applications close on 10 January 2026; decisions will be announced by 1 February 2026.
  • The initiative is supported by Appleby Global and the Health Improvement Commission.

The Better Journeys Project has opened applications for its newly launched Fund for Schools, aimed at enhancing active travel among students in Guernsey and Jersey.

The fund offers practical grants and expert guidance to assist schools in implementing or expanding infrastructure and programmes that encourage pupils to walk, scoot, and cycle to school.

Eligible initiatives for funding include the installation of secure cycle parking, creation of safer access routes, provision of lockers, loan bikes, and engagement campaigns to facilitate safe travel to school.

Schools in Guernsey may receive grants of up to £3,000, while those in Jersey can apply for up to £1,500.

This funding addresses common budget constraints faced by schools and aims to facilitate immediate improvements that alleviate congestion, enhance air quality, and bolster children's health and independence.

Schools interested in applying must identify a project requiring funding.

A short online application form must be completed by 10 January 2026, and applicants will be notified of the outcomes by 1 February 2026. Successful projects will be supported by the Better Journeys Project to share their outcomes and stories once delivered.

“This Fund helps schools turn good ideas into real, on-the-ground changes that make the school run cleaner, safer, and healthier for everyone,” stated Rollo de Sausmarez, a Director at the Better Journeys Project.

Amy Woollaston, Active Travel Officer, commented, “The Health Improvement Commission are thrilled to support the ‘Fund for Schools’ initiative by the Better Journeys Project in Guernsey as it is a fantastic opportunity to help make active travel the easier choice for local families."

The Fund for Schools is designed to support projects that promote active travel (walking, cycling, and scooting) among pupils of all ages by improving accessibility, convenience, and safety. Schools that implement funded projects will receive assistance from the Better Journeys Project in publicising the outcomes and sharing best practices.
