The Beau Sejour Theatre will undergo essential technical upgrades beginning in mid-April, resulting in its closure for two months.

It comes in response  to the  findings of an annual inspection in January that highlighted the need for immediate improvements.

Critical upgrades are required to enhance the venue's drop bars and associated equipment.

Drop bars, that are above the stage and auditorium that the lights and sets hang from, will be replaced.

They will be updated so they can be winched up and down for lights to be changed, instead of the current practice of climbing a ladder.

The project will be led by specialist contractors, which an appointment due soon.

During the theatre's closure, most scheduled events will be moved to the David Ferguson Hall or other available spaces at the Beau Sejour site.

These include the Guernsey Literary Festival schools event, The George Michel Legacy show, and the  sold out Katie Hopkins event.

Work is ongoing on what will happen with planned events by Gate, Music Box, JLPA and Evoke.

The Elizabeth College School Show will no longer happen in the venue.

Sam Herridge, Head of Recreation Services at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, said: “We know how much this theatre means to our performers, hirers and the wider community, and we fully recognise the disappointment and disruption this temporary closure will cause.”

She highlighted the commitment of the team to work closely with affected hirers to find alternative solutions, whether through relocation to the David Ferguson Hall or rescheduling.

Damon Hackley, Director of Operations for Economy, Infrastructure, Environment & Culture, said: “These improvements are an important investment in the Beau Sejour theatre’s ongoing ability to operate.”

Hackley reassured that the team aims to complete the enhancements swiftly and reinstates normal operations, emphasising the theatre's importance to the community and its commercial role within Beau Sejour's operating model.
