Flightradar24 commented on social media, stating, “This is the most interested anyone has ever been in an ATR 72. And no, we have no idea why.”
Speculation arose on social media regarding the source of this attention, with theories suggesting the possible presence of royal items onboard or famous personalities among the passengers.
But others pointed to a more mundane explanation of a popularity snowball effect or feedback loop.
Once a flight appears on the most tracked list for any reason, even more people begin to view it, creating a cycle where popularity breeds more popularity.
Aurigny First Officer Tamer Birsen said: “For us, it was just a routine flight - Guernsey to Manchester is a trip we know well. After we climbed out of beautiful Guernsey, we were later welcomed with stunning, clear views over the south coast of England, past Portsmouth and then London.”
He added that learning about the large audience tracking the flight was a delightful surprise and highlighted Guernsey's appeal as a travel destination.
Sam Claxton, Marketing Manager for VisitGuernsey, said: “It’s not every day that Guernsey finds itself in the global spotlight thanks to a routine flight, but we’re thrilled that so many people got a glimpse of our island, even if just virtually.”
Claxton expressed hope that this curiosity would translate into future visitors discovering Guernsey’s picturesque coastline, rich heritage, and hospitality.
